Renewal calendar
When does a license to sell dog treats renew?
Verified September 7, 2026. Figures quoted from the statute, rule, fee page or form.
Nothing about a feed license is harder than remembering it. The firm instrument and the product registration often renew on different calendars in the same state, one on a July to June year and the other on the calendar year, and the late fee starts a few weeks after the date. This page lists both periods for every verified state so the two dates can go in a diary before the first sale.
Four kinds of period
Calendar year, expiring on the last day of December with renewal due before the first of January. Fiscal year, expiring at the end of June with renewal due by the first of July. Rolling year, one year from the date the instrument was issued. And in one state, a permanent firm license with no renewal at all, only the product side renewing each year.
Product registrations almost always run on the calendar year, due on the first of January, with a late fee kicking in during January or February. Where a state charges a two-year firm term, the product side still renews every year, so the cheap year is the one with no firm fee.
What renewal takes
The same application form, the current fee, and any new or revised labels. States that review labels want the revised version before the product ships, not at renewal. A change of name, owner or location is usually a new instrument rather than a renewal, because the license is not transferable in most states.

Questions people actually type
What if I miss the renewal date?
Most verified states print a late fee, either a flat amount or a percentage, and a few raise the fee in bands the longer payment slips. Distributing after the instrument has lapsed is distributing without a license, which the penalty sections treat as a violation in its own right. The state cost page prints the late charge with its citation.
Do I renew the product registration if the recipe has not changed?
Yes, in every verified state that registers products. The registration is annual and the fee is due each year whether or not anything changed. A recipe change that alters the label is a revised label to send in, not a new registration, unless the product name changes.
Can I renew online?
Several verified states run an online licensing portal and a few still take a paper form and a check. The portal itself is not in the text we read for most states, so any portal-only fee or convenience charge is printed as unknown on the state page rather than guessed.
